Chicago Apartments, 2021
CHICAGO
The task here was to create an apartment complex located on the corner of a block in Chicago. The building was to be occupied by any organization on the ground level while everything second floor up to be made up of the same unit floor plan plus any additional accommodations needed.
Unit Plan
Shown is the finished unit floor plan. It is an open floor plan but has different levels to make the space feel bigger. One would enter into the kitchen and can either take three steps down into the living room or three steps up into the bedroom and bathroom. Each unit would have its own picture view window and balcony.
Floor Plans
Above are the four different floor plans in the apartment building. The ground floor consists of a retail space and restaurant with the complex lobby sitting in between them. Next is the second floor that has 7 units and a lobby space for residents. The third floor has doors to an exterior space that connects both towers of the apartment. The last plan shows a rooftop area on the lower tower and how the taller tower continues to arrange the remaining units.
Elevations
In these drawings are the two street facing elevations. The design chosen here was to follow the varying heights of the surrounding context. From this came the idea of the two towers. This decision allowed to have two full floors with the third floor being an open courtyard through the middle. This decision also gave each unit the chance to have their own private balcony. To get more privacy every other unit was mirrored creating an “s” like form throughout the building.
Sections
An axonometric section was created to show how the varying levels in each unit stacked on top of one another. As well as showing how the ADA units worked without the levels with the rest of the floors. In this one can also see the exterior courtyard as well as the connecting walkway to the rooftop area.
